Watson chronicles the nearly 200 vessels since 1900 which came upon disaster as a result of weather, fire, collision, etc. To be included a vessel must have either been in service or about to be refitted and must have been so badly damaged that its career was terminated. For each ship he gives a brief physical description (length, tonnage, speed, etc.), the owners, year built, passenger capacity, and a short summary of the vessel`s career and how it met with disaster. Watson also includes at least one photograph of each ship, at times even showing before and after. Appendixes include a summary of disasters by country; summary of casualties by cause; the 30 largest ships in disasters; etc.
